Rotman Commerce Sample Lecture "Exploring Algorithmic Trading"
Sunday November 3, 2024 10:15am - 10:45am EST
Session Details: Ever wondered how computers can execute trades faster than you can blink? In this short lecture, we’ll explore the world of algorithmic trading – where computers follow predefined sets of rules to make thousands of trades in just milliseconds. From simple strategies like buying a fixed number of shares over time to advanced techniques like high-frequency trading, algorithms now account for over 70% of all trades on North American exchanges.

Using a case study, we’ll examine a basic trading algorithm, demonstrating how it can automatically identify opportunities to profit from small price differences between exchanges. We’ll also dive into high-frequency trading, discussing its advantages and disadvantages with a real-life example.
This presentation will give you a sneak peek into algorithmic trading, which is taught as part of RSM 434: Financial Trading Strategies, a 4th-year course offered in the Rotman Commerce program. Given the dominance of algorithms in today’s financial markets, it’s important for students to understand how coding and decision-making intersect in a fast-paced, competitive environment.

Rotman Commerce Sample Lecture "Mastering the Power & Significance of Branding"
Sunday November 3, 2024 1:15pm - 1:45pm EST
Session Details: To thrive in marketing and life, mastering the power and significance of branding is essential. The most critical brand you will ever represent is your own. Crafting a strong brand may take years of dedicated effort but can unravel in mere moments. Today's billion-dollar brand can lose 30-50% of its value overnight, as we've seen with companies like X (formerly Twitter), Adidas, Peloton, and BlackBerry.

Conversely, multi-billion-dollar brands like McDonald's, Amazon, Google, Coca-Cola, and Apple flourish because they recognize the importance of nurturing and expanding their brand equity. Effective branding transcends a logo or name; it involves building a unique identity that shapes how people perceive a business, product, or service.

The world's most valuable brands share key characteristics:
  • Clear Brand Identity: They project a consistent image across all channels.
  • Emotional Connection: They establish strong bonds with customers, fostering loyalty.
  • High Perceived Value: They command a premium due to their reputation for quality.
  • Relevance: They understand and adapt to the evolving needs of their target audience.
  • Cultural Resonance: They stay aligned with cultural trends and values.
  • Trust and Credibility: They consistently deliver on promises.
  • Adaptability: They evolve with changing markets to maintain their edge.

This session will explore how strong branding drives customer preference, supports premium pricing, and secures a competitive advantage in an ever-changing landscape marked by demanding consumers and advancing technology. Understanding and implementing these principles can transform a brand into an enduring market leader.
